Restrictors - Don't roll yours Eyes!!

OK, I have taken on the restrictors in a Japanese import, as a bit of a challenge. So far it is good I have had some fun, and learned a lot about the bike. A bike shop said they can fix it but will not quote a price and the priorty was not high enough to commit :?: :?: $$$$

The restictor on this particlular bike limts the speed at 180k. Some may think that is quick enough, generally I do too, but there is a challenge to over come and the potential must be available even if it is not used.

I realise that many have been here before so please don't shoot me for asking the question....Ok

So far I have replaced the speedo with an Ozzie speedo that is not restricted. I took an ozzie instrument cluster apart and took the speedo unit out. Did the same with mine. I compared the two together to see what the differences are, in an attempt to find out the real oil about these things.

The Japanese part has a volume of electronics added to the speedo unit. On this unit it has a disk that turns with the speed indicator (needle). This disk has a large gap, so as it turns and the needle reaches 180 k a step in the disk comes in line with two electrodes (They look like Carbon blocks similar to brushes from an electric motor). Being the smart ass I am, I figure if the speedo didn't have the disc, but retained the electronics, the system would think the bike never went as fast as 180k

Now the story. Ok, ozzie speedo, Japanese electronics retained. After two weeks of waiting I took the bike for a hiding yesterday. Although the distances and frequency was not that great, but the bloody thing is still restricted... I think. The problem is it seems to go flat, probably start missing at about 6750 rpm.

Have I envoked another rev limiter, or is there a posibility there are fueling problems :?:
The bike has and does have a fueling problem when riding really hard. When throttling back on, after a throttle off at high speeds, and after a length of time with full throttle "selected" it will bork as if it is running out of fuel.

So I could have 2 problems :?:
Does anyone have intimate knowledge of this speed limiter, that may be willing to part with some info :?: and save me some more demolishing and still guessing if I have Fuel problems??

Any help appreciated.

Hi Sarg, try this

Is the restrictor circuit connected to the speedo? I found that an import TRX will stop dead at 180KPH in top gear - unless you unplug the restrictor circuit; in which case it stops dead at around 6500-7000 revs in ALL gears!

See below for an explaination of how to get around the speed restrictor... (This is for a TZR250 3XV, but the principle is the same... The circuit MUST be plugged in for this to work)

The other way is to fit a 4UN Cdi as I have done.... Then you can fit an MPH speedo and leave the rectrictor circuit hanging in the breeze if you wish....
This is from the old site, but it may help

Thanks Ash.

All seems logical. By doing what I did with the other speedo, attaching all the electronics from the old Janaese one, I thought the result would be the same, but maybe not. There could be something else "One cannot see" or understand.

Thanks so much for the trouble you went to. I got a quote for a 4un at $250 a little while ago. Too tight right now I guess & thought I could beat the bastard.

:D Am watching!!!

Note that it allows the bike to rev past 7000. I have posted before that my bike revs to only 7000 (standard cans, microns to about 6,700).

:D Ridgi, got the Posh derestrictor, you wouldn't by any chance have any English instructions would you, I think I can understand that it goes on in place of the wiring that goes to the Speedo. Clarification would be great though.
Otherwise going to have to bother Max to get it translated.

:D Forget the instructions, fairing off look at wiring and it was easy, is now done, as are Iridium plugs whilst fairing off. Now to play with the fast boys ( and girls )
