engine clanging sounds uner load

Hey all, I have a 1996 model which Ive just finished restoring, went for its first ride around the local streets and there is a distinct loud metal clang sound at around 3000rpm. I pulled the oil filter to see if there were any metal shavings (a few tiny bits, but not have run it hard enough to really get it going). Cam chain seems fine as is the plastic bracket. My next guess is piston slap so i'll be pulling it apart..again. Anybody have a similar issue? Its a pretty loud metallic clanging noise, even did it when i first started it the other day, but normally only in gear at around 3-4rpm.
