Camchain tensioner

Hello,call me a numpty but I cannot remember which way up the cam chain tensioner goes. Ratchet side up or down?

Pretty sure it's ratchet side up but I think it only fits one way up anyway? The bolt holes are offset, not straight across..
'95 4NX with K&N filter, Motad Venom cans, YSS PD valves, Ohlins fork springs, 530 C+S, Green CDI, 11/16 radial master cylinder, +30mm jack up dog bones. Enjoyable money pit.

Took mine out yesterday and the ratchet mechanism (teeth on the plunger) was at the bottom.

Yes ratchet down!!!!!
so as chain rotates it’s pulling downwards on the tensioner and teeth lock onto the ratchet.
When you look at the tensioner where the spring tensioner bolt is, you will see the 2 bolt fixing holes above and below.
The hole on top is a little closer to the spring tensioner bolt.
I paint a little line on this raised section to remind me on motor rebuilds.

The tensioner will fit either way but you need to get it facing the right way.
Crank rotates anti-clockwise looking from the alt cover and timing marks.
