OIL CHANGE

Just a quick one. I'm about to do an oil change (not for the first time) and this time want to check the 'mystery' filter - is it contained within the oil pipe running down the back of the engine. I remember seeing a thread on the topic a while back which suggested it was hard to access, whereas removal of the pipe I'm referring to seems reasonably straightforward. What am I missing? Many thanks.

I do wonder if this is worth the effort.
The filter is not a normal maintenance item, it's not even on the parts list.
From the response of those who have done it:
reckon after 24 years it needs doing
Surprisingly clean filter, just a little crud on underside

That’s right Dicky.
There is another gauze filter in the engine pan and the scavenge pump draws through and pumps it up to the top sump.
Both where clean on my rebuild at 145,000km.

And what if it is full of crud? Two people replying is NOT a conclusive test! It's easy to do and If you are NOT the original owner of the bike then you don't know in what condition any of the internal parts are.
Check it, peace of mind and then you have a starting point. Brian, the other course filters in the engine are down stream from this filter and are for the capture of debris from internal failures NOT external foreign objects as is the primary function of this filter.

Hi As a new and ignorant owner I killed an engine.

The problem was knackered cam and journal caused by insufficient oil feed to top end.

I learned to check this with the gallery bolt on left side of engine.

The cause was a blocked filter in the oil tank.

Well worth checking.

As I know it's there and now know where it is, I'll be checking it. If I don't I'll keep thinking about it. It may not be a service item, but then my manual only includes service tasks going forward 4 years - if Yamaha included 25 year service checks then the filter may have been included :lol:

The filter has quite a small surface area considering what it does, reckon frequent oil changes are good
Glad I did mine, but wont bother again for another 30,000 miles

Bugger ..... thought I knew where the filter was hiding but when I removed the pipe fitting it was nowhere to be seen. Just checked the drawing again and I've removed the wrong (bottom) fitting!!! Will remove the top connection tomorrow - hopefully I'll find the filter behind that one :roll:

Hum not so sure now :?: If the filter is located behind the top fitting there isn't much space between the fitting and the frame cross member. Could someone who has removed it confirm that there is sufficient room to slip the filter out? I removed the sump today to replace the gasket so checked the oil pick filter and it was clear or any debris - is this any sort of indication that the other filter is likely to be clear too?
