Fitting R1 Fork Extenders

So I bought the R1 extenda kit:

but how the hell do you get the damper rod retaining screw undone from the bottom of the forks???

Rattle gun is the normal way!

Cheers Mince, but boy not understand. I can turn the screw, but it just turns the damper tube inside the forkleg. Unsure how a rattle gun will help.

...but that didn't stop me from trying it! Should use my air tools more often. Just have to re-assemble everything now.

Thats an interesting solution, do they tell you what the new oil levels and air gaps should be?

Hey Coxy,

I think a bit of experimentation will be required, the instructions supplied only say to replace the same (or amount of) oil as removed. And if "using the oil height method, add the fork extension length to the standard measurement". I'll start with replacing the same amount and then check that for height. If a large discrepancy, then I will think and investigate. After that, test ride and evaluate, adjust and iterate.

Well I didn't plan for this - the hydraulic lines aren't long enough to place the calipers in the desired position. I'll drop the forks through the triple clamps 'till they do fit and see what I end up with.

You can get custom brake lines from HEL at a very reasonable price (ie, the same as the standard price)

Hey Dicky, I think my TRX front axle adaptor may be just a whisker too large in diameter with the result that the pinch faces don't meet. Combined with too much torque on the ratchet and allen-key combo and voila! She's a forked fork mate. In retrospect no need for it to have been done up that tight, I could loctite the adaptor in place and just nip up the two bolts.
Have grabbed another pair of forks from a wrecker off eBay and should have them by the end of the week, but it's money spent unnecessarily. I hate paying for my own stupidity, but no use crying over spilt oil. Lesson is to hurry less and think more.

Thanks for the brake line tip, yeah was thinking of braided replacements. Will check them out.

All back together over the weekend and out for a fang over the hills. Pretty happy with the result. Have the forks dropped a bit over 2cm through the clamps to accomodate the too-short brake lines and gotta say it feels so much better. Much more stable and no loss of agility. Reckon the stock R1 setup left the front end too steep. The extenders leave the forks the same length as the standard TRX jobs and with a couple of cm drop it all seems just right. Also don't feel like I'm going to grind my boots on every half-decent corner!

That's why I went with a billet trees with stepped top yoke so I have the same 30mm offset and forks are at the same height as the Std TRX set up.
And the 40mm raised clip ons get them to the original height although mounted a little further forward.
I had them dropped 14 mm through the yoke for a short time but I'm quite happy with them back sitting flush. I took a total Std TRX for s quick ride 24 hrs ago realised why I went that route because the TRX just feels pretty good right from the start.
