2 Things happened today, my speedo needle started bouncing up and down once I hit 80km, but funny enough it stopped if I sat on about 4000rpm but started again once I dropped below 3500rpm. The cable seems fine, I did read it might be the clutch meter but that was all checked over and was all AOK before I put the bike back together. Then whilst riding around today the bloody whole needle snapped off.

So is the needle thing easy to fix? My old Katana had the same thing and to get into the instrument panel was a nightmare is the TRX the same deal?
Can i get new needles?

Dash unbolted from the fairing frame and just disconnects from the main loom under the tank.
Back panel is held in place by a couple of screws so speedo, taco is easily accessed.

I have had that issue a few times, generally before the speedo cable goes,

I would have a look at replacing it as it is you most likely culprit

the speedo mechanism is not serviceable, if it's gone you will just need to replace the clocks

There is a little magnetic piece in the clocks that goes, but not replaceable

easy enough to get into speedo....the bouncing thing is a concern and probably not fixable....cant replace parts inside speedo easily as mechanism frame is not screwed together

just looking at ebay, and the price of cables for the TRX 850 seems to be higher that for the YZF750. Both are the same part so better to buy the cheaper one methinks

Thanks Cobba for the parts and nice meeting one of the members.
Unfortunately all the new parts didn't fix the problem, needle was still bouncing all over the place till it snapped off again.
So it looks like I'll need to take it to a repair shop as when I was riding it around I could hear the gears stripping inside, .
If anyone can point me to a speedo repair shop that would be great(did find one at Salisbury).

I will be taking the cluster apart again though to see just what is happening.

Bugger!!

Pulled it apart and the cogs look AOK. So it's got to be where the cable screws into the back of the "socket cord Assembly".

Just did some testing and it's not the Socket Cord it's the internal instrument cluster. Just spun the rear cog on the instrument cluster and could hear some gear noise. shit shit shit. Looks like i'm off to Lionel Otto on Monday to drop off the unit to see if he can do anything with it.
