Like Alex says, take out the central plug on the left casing, the alternator is behind it and you`ll see the rotor retaining bolt head (while viewed from sitting on the bike).
Use a socket, (make sure it`s the correct size, you don`t want to round it off) on an extension and very carefully turn the motor over (if you can).
Off the top of my head I cannot remember the direction the crank runs in normally but I reckon it`ll be anticlockwise. That makes sense because the cam chain tensioner takes up the slack run in the cam chain and it`s on the back of the block. If I`m mistaken some other members will correct me on this.
Best keep to trying to turn the motor over in just ONE direction, I`m sure it`ll be anticlockwise. If you try rocking it back and forth and something`s worked loose you could do more damage.
I would try to turn the motor over with the cam cover off, so that you can see the cams turning, valves actuating etc too.
If it`s requiring more than firm pressure on the ratchet handle or there`s any type of grinding, clunking or snatching, firm resistance etc, you can assume there are some problems that require the motor to be looked at carefully.
That will, at the very least, mean the sump off the bottom of the motor.
Oh and yes, make sure the bike is in neutral.

Edit:

Reading back through what you`ve already posted I`m going to stick my neck out here, I`m wondering if you`ve had a partial seize in the bores due to the excess petrol `washing` the oil from the bores, that could have caused her to grab up and lock the wheel.
The more you try to turn the motor over the more the piston, rings and bores could gall up and become harder to turn over, in fact you could actually end up causing more damage but you do need to find out what it is so do everything `gently` just now.
Any bike shops or dealers close to you? A quiet word with the technicians could well have some kind hearted soul (most decent bikers are) dropping by your place in a lunch hour or after work to take a look at things for you. It might also get you the offer of a `homer`, meaning someone would offer to help you repair it outside his work hours and the extortionate prices dealerships charge too.

one reason could be the flooding carbs have filled the crankcases with fuel which has mixed with and " thinned " the oil

This could have resulted in a big end failure but hopefully not .......... Id suggest dropping the oil and seeing how it feels and smells

I dont live too far away and will be working in Whitehaven soon if you want a second opinion let me know

Good luck

Chris

the story so far took the exhausts off this morning and the left hand pipe was full of petrol. dropped the oil and yes it stunk of petrol (not looking good) took the bung out of the left hand side and gently tried to turn the motor over, anti clockwise the motor would turn but the cam gear was stationary unable to turn the motor clockwise.

Hydraulic lock?

Pull the spark plugs and try to turn it.
My bike maybe a dinosaur but it still has some bite & has a mighty roar.

Sometimes I wake up grumpy ........ but usually I let her sleep in

could the trouble have been caused by the fuel tap being left at the PRIME..[horisontal]..setting ..being that the fuel would have gravity pressured the carbs ..hence filled the engine with fuel...in the OLD DAYS ...we would turn the fuel tap off after each ride to stop this very thing happening...you would be trusting the condition of the carb seals and seats..otherwise...how else would the fuel have flled the engine and exhaust..dilluting the engine oil...causing a massve problem...sorry to hear of this happening....

yes i am afraid this is what has happened. thanks to tzx660 who came round this morning to have a look at my bike. it has stripped the cam chain drive on the crank see pics

tzx660 was kind enough to give me a go on his trx omg what a difference his bike is standard and felt like it had twice as much go as the one i bought. :( :( :(

Good chance this has been caused by over tigthening of the cam retainers - usually results in either the bolts shearing down into the head or as in your case shedding of teeth from the sprocket.

Really sorry to hear your early experiences with a TRX have been so bad :(

Hi NWS870R the problem was caused by a Hydraulic lock due to left hand carb dumping a load of fuel into the bore. just like to say a big thanks to all who replied with help and advice especially tzx660 who helped diagnose the problem.

Ok, well hydraulic locks can happen, but by ferk that must have been some amount of fuel!
Petrol especially easily creeps past the piston ring / bore interface. It`s usually water / coolant from a blown head gasket that creates such severe hydraulic locks.
Anyhow, good on tzx660 for coming to help diagnose it. =D>
Now, decision time.............................................
If it was me I would get the motor out and stripped, you can repair the crank by doing the old `weld a new section in` trick as other members have done with stripped cam sprockets. You don`t need a TRX 270 degree crank either (they are getting hard to find in good nick), you can use a TDM 180 degree crank and have the cam sprocket end machined off ready to be welded to your existing crank.
Obviously bothering to do that depends on the overall condition of the crank once you get it out of the motor and can have it checked over for any other damage / wear etc.
You`ll need to check out the bores, pistons etc anyway, and to get out all that contaminated fuel / oil mix. PLUS you can check out the issue NWS talked of too, overtight camshaft caps. Mind, that wouldn`t explain the amount of fuel everywhere but it sure could be part of the problem that led to the failure.
I`m amazed the bike ran at all on two cylinders if that left hand carb was allowing that much fuel into the motor!
In fact I don`t think fuel would have passed the carbs jets and drillings to get into the motor in a large enough volume to create a hydraulic lock, I now suspect the fuel tap was at fault.
I say that because the left hand inlet stub (viewed from sitting on the bike) provides the vacuum to activate the diaphragm in the tap which allows fuel to flow.
If fuel wasn`t stopped from flowing when there was zero vacuum (when the motor wasn`t running), then fuel would flow under gravity directly into the inlet stub through the vacuum hose.
This MUST be the source of the problem, I`ll be amazed if it isn`t.
Not good advertising for the TRX this type of thing but as with anything mechanical these things CAN happen and to pretty much any bike too. I don`t like vacuum fuel taps for this very reason but the Japanese are mad for them. You can`t beat a simple on / off tap, turn it off each time you stop the bike, turn it back on before starting the motor, always rebuildable too.
Have you managed to speak to the last owner yet John?
I`m sure members here will help all they can in getting it sorted, sourcing bits and pieces for you etc. Unless that is you`ve become disheartened and are considering breaking it for parts and looking for another or something else?

cheers MH I was a little disheartened at first but after having a go on txz660 trx I know this is the kind of bike i want own and ride, his bike was so much better than mine power delivery wise and his bike is standard. I have been in contact with the last owner, he is being very sheepish about the fact he has had problems with the fuel tap and the flooding issue. I will know more on what the damage is next week and keep you posted.

Cheers john

Ditto, GOOD LUCK with it all John and keep those pictures coming of what you find, it`s not nice for you as the owner but it makes interesting and good forum material.
By the way, had it been the right exhaust that was full of fuel you could have expected the diaphragm in the vacuum fuel pump to have failed and causing that, again by fuel flowing into the right inlet stub via the vacuum hose.
So members, beware any flooding problems with your TRX`s, get it sorted immediately.

Gonna do a full engine rebuild and some other mods. I wanted a project and I think you will agree thats exactly what i have got. I am gonna be bending a lot of ears over the comming weeks /months. I think the 2 into 2 pipes are gonna have to go to help fund this project.

Cheers john
