So this time it has been my turn.
Dented my headers driving onto a road from a pavement...and hit the edge...

So I ran into the problems posted here. How did I solve them?
I used some acetic acid - but let me face it - it probably didn't help. The collar keep stuck on the exhaust bolts, because the holes of the collar are so narrow, that there is almost no gap between them and the bolt. Then that tiny gap is stuffed with any kind of dirt and "grit" so that this just isn't a disolving question.

The inner bolts (the 2 between the header pipes) are usually more stuck.

What really helped was
a) Heat and shock cool with hot air pistol and Water spray a couple of times
b) Then heat up thouroughly
d) Clamp the collar and bolt with pliers (use old nut on the bolt)
e) When doing the inner bolts, tap slightly on the outer edge of the collar
Doing so I had no problem getting them off.



How can you avoid this in future?
a) I widened the collar's holes to 9mm (drill).
b) Filed off a bit of the collar's outer edge (cylinder side).
This helps clamping.

ive found a nice thin coat of high temp never seeze works wonders. Many ppl swear against it, but its never failed me yet.

If you have it, clean everything up with a wire brush on a grinder or a little hand tool. So its all nice and clean. Blow it all down with a compressor, failing that, get your wifes hair dryer to blow it clean.
Nice thin coat on mating parts when you put it together.. Helps everything pull apart nicely, AND helps things seal nicely aswell.

Great guide tho. many ppl bitch about how hard it is to pull those suckers off !

I've tried all of that - including the use of the adjustable wrench. I gave up in the end as I was more ilkely to end up breaking the studs.

how do you get the anti-sieze on there, when you can't get it apart in the first place?

all i did was just keep tapping on the flange left side then right and after about half an hour they came off the studs,,its not easy though

Haven't had the need to take my headers off yet but has anyone with stuck ones tried taking the nuts off then running the bike to see if that will loosen them - note I said run not ride riding it could be a disaster!

I'd also say that you need to take the silencers off beforehand, since
you need to tilt the headers. So it's gonna be a bit loud...
But still, it might work.
