Rear Shock Rebuild Recommendations?

Post by davamb » Sun Nov 22, 2015 5:45 am

Bought a spare rear shock (thanks Jim) to get rebuilt while I continue (?) to ride on what I've got. Does anyone have any recommendations for a reliable and professional service to do this work, preferably in Melb, but if there's better to be had by post, then I'm up for it.

Thanks,
Dave.

Hi Dave,

I've just been speaking with Peter at ProMechA about some fork and rear shock improvements. He's been very informative and is well priced. Hoping to get some goodies mid December if all works out [-o<

He's Melbourne local, in Mulgrave. Plenty of info on their website as well.

Cheers,
Matt

Hi Matt,

I have tried to do business with Promecha twice. The first time I was prepared to give the man a second chance, but after being stuffed around by him a second time, I will have nothing further to do with him. I advise you and everyone else that you deal with this man at your own risk. I can't stress this highly enough. I am not the only one who thinks this way.
Ride Well!
Cheers, Dave.

I have used Promecha a few times over the years, never had a problem myself. I don't have first hand experience but I have heard Krooztune in Boronia know their stuff. They are next door to Dynoverks/motorcycle spares warehouse, who supply the trx carb kits.
Cheers,
Bane.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the heads up mate, that's not good to hear. I'll keep the options open.

Cheers.

Thanks Bane, I've used Krooz before but forgot all about them. Good call. And yeah Matt, I know of others that have used Promecha and reckon he's given them good service, but have heard just as many people complain about him.

I'll give you my story FWIW and if this is deemed not acceptable to the forum then feel free to censor: I used to work within cooee of him and decided to get him to rebuild my Koni shocks. Had a good old chat with him and we agreed on a collection date (a month in the future) and I left it at that. Didn't hear anything from him so decided to drop around at lunchtime on the due date to collect. He was absolutely furious with me - wanting to know what the hell I was doing dropping by unannounced, said that the due date was formally 5pm, some 3 hours hence. I was somewhat abashed and left to return just on 5. He dumped the shocks on the counter, said he couldn't get one of the mounting grommets and demanded his payment. I paid and left without further conversation.

About a year later I thought back and wondered if I'd done something wrong in the previous round. So I thought it worth a second chance. I took an old pair of forks to him for rechroming and general reconditioning. Agreed on a date again. About two weeks after the due date I dropped by and asked for the forks back. He really wasn't happy about this, but handed them over. He hadn't even dismantled them.

Now look, I'm always prepared to think I'm the first one to blame when these sorts of things go pear shaped, seems my expectations are always higher than what is in the offing, but you know - I thought back over both encounters and buggered if I can find where I was the one at fault. I've heard other stories from other people, but I'm not going to pass those on as hearsay. Type Promecha Google Reviews into your search engine and have a look at what comes back.

I took the forks to Krooz and they were precise and professional and I was pleased with the job. To this day I'm not sure if my Konis were actually overhauled.
Ride Well!
Cheers, Dave.

I don't think you are alone there Dave, I have heard a lot of bad reports about Pro Mecha over the years so have always steered well clear.
Kroozetune on the other hand did some R1 forks for me as well as a rear shock. Got great service.
After a short time the right hand R1 fork had a slight weep. I took it back to them, they apologised and replaced the seal pronto, no charge. Sometimes the best test of service is when something goes a little wrong.
You also have Wilbers at Seaford, which I think used to be ASR at Dromana, but also now seems to be Suspensions R Us. I'm going to look into what's going on there as I have been planning for a while for Suspension R Us to do some work for me as I have heard many good reports about them.
It must be true, I read it on the internet.

Good service is always a testament as Stu says and helps to sell your business.
Where I get my suspension mods done at MPE at Caloundra , service is always with a smile and pro customer.
The 1 reason I've sent about 8 other members to get their suspension retuned.
Follow up service. =D> =D>
A slight weep a couple of mths after doing my rear shock, they fixed it no charge and retuning the gold valves they fitted was another job they did as a part of their after sales service for free.
I purchased new bushes online, and they fitted them at the same time as a bonus. The old Bushes where well within spec but I know now all components are new throughout.
In saying that Promecha rebuilt the std forks I had with emulators / 0.9 springs and was a big improvement and they are now on Rods bike.
I never personally dealt with them on that.
May have been a blessing in disguise, .  or the work was done on a good hair day...
