Would a curved rod made to the correct length work ?

Quite possibly, not sure how that would feel though &it's beyond my capabilites at the moment.

(plus a curved rod would be a pain to adjust...)

Can you extend and lower (maybe down and forward) the point where the shift rod attaches to the gear lever on the rearset to give you an angle and clearance that won't foul ????.
Don't forget if the gearshift pivot on the shift shaft is upside down your reverse your shift pattern.
I don't have my bike here as a reference to see if it's the correct way.

I think it works standard shift the way I said, I only did it as a quick experiment & then fitted the rearsets to my VFR so I haven't really given it any more thought than that.

Pretty easy to make it work though, possibly even take some meat off the underside of the mounts & extend the stock rod...
