Advice Required

Post by Kenvis Repesco » Sun Jan 06, 2013 6:16 pm

As part of my Winter refurb I have stripped the paint of the top and sides of my radiator. The paint that was on it before looked like it had been applied with a rag on the end of a stick. Obviously I wont be touching the fins but I would like to spray the top and sides. I have never done this before so have no idea on what kind of paint and if I need to undercoat first. Has anyone on the forum ever sprayed a rad before and if so any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have had a look on Ebay but cant really see anything suitable for a motorbike radiator, thanks again David.

A heat resistant paint would be best.
I always use pj1 engine paint too cos its a good finish and cures at air temperture.
Not the cheapest though.

Thanks for that, I have ordered some heat resistant paint. Was just wondering if I should prime before I put a top coat on though, thanks David.

Depends on the.paint.
With quality stuff like.pj1 you dont.
As always with painting, the key is in good prep then thin coats.

As has already been mentioned, prep is the key - if it's been painted before and the painter used a cheap rattle can of animal make sure you really prep it good as heat proof paint can fisheye if applied over a cheap paint so depending on how you want the rad to look, really take your time getting in to everywhere.

Thanks for that. I have completely removed all the paint and the top and sides are now bare metal. I think I might give it a bit of a rub over with fine sand paper to give it a bit of a key, and then primer it. I have ordered some heat resistant paint it aint PJ1 though hope its ok, having said that it says Techcoat PJ1 on the can. Has anyone had any kind of experience with this brand good or bad, thanks again David.
