rebuild v r6 shock

Post by jjmoto » Wed Sep 07, 2011 10:11 pm

I've had my trx for about a year now having bought it as a damaged repairable. I'm starting to think about this winters projects (once i've finished rebuilding my garage). I'm not sure whether to go down the r6 shock route or get the stocker rebuilt as i've got FTR (ohlins specialist) more or less on my doorstep & MCT (as used by many bike mags) about 10 miles away. The cost of either option is similar, i'm favouring the rebuild option cos its a known quantity as opposed to buying a used shock that may need a rebuild. I'm aware the r6 shock is probably more adjustable, but that might be a problem as i'm a bit simple when it comes to suspension fettling. Any advise/opinions welcome cheers

If it was me, I'd have the standard shock rebuilt and take the opportunity to change the spring (they are very cheap) to suit my weight and riding

If your weight is around the 86kg mark your on the money for the spring rate for a R6 shock.
I found one that came straight off a brand new bike (bike was used as a track bike)and had not been used 8) so with adaptor all up cost me just over $200 Aust to the door.
With the springs changed in the front forks beforehand I then complimented them with emulators after fitting an R6 shock

With a bit of clever ebaying you sould be able to pick up a r6 shock for £60( i paid this for mine and it was new !!), I would highly recommend the r6 swap as you get high /low speed damping . Personally i cant see the point of getting an old shock rebuilt as i went this may with the shock on my rsv and had to send it back twice in 6 months due to leaking seals :( . you could alway do the r6 swap and then get mct to set it up .

Whereas the R6 shock may be better than the TRX shock, it is still a built to a cost shock that is designed to work with bith 7 stone rider and a 15 stone rider who may even take a pillion?

And I'd wager the hi and low speed adjustment makes very littlke difference and is just more buttons for the average rider to mess up settings with.

So having a shock rebuilt for your weight and riding will always be better IMO.

I 'only' have YZF750 forks with limited adjustabilkity but they have been rebuilt for me and I have never had to twiddle the adjusters.

Have to agree here, Maxton shocks are recognised worldwide for their quality and lifetime rebuildability, but they are not covered in the usual gadgets, screws and add-ons the manufacturers like to hook and hold folk with. Never stops folk winning races with their kit though.
Many of the OE kit is simply playing up to folks seemingly never ending need to have all the lights and whistles on anything they own!
If we allow ourselves we can be seriously compromised by the effects from the marketing industries and much poorer too.

Logical captain Kirk..they make them to suit the masses... not everyone is the same weight (spring rate is a compramise tho)so things can be tailored to suit your needs without feeding some one elses pocket because you have to rebuilt to suit . It's just how ignorant people want to be...(not saying you's lads are ignorant ...not at all :) )

I knew this was'nt going to be a simple answer! If funds allowed i would probably get a Hagon or Nitron basic shock i had the stock shock re-gassed at FTR & set everything to standard along with checking cleaning & lubricating all the linkages. The guy at MCT assured me that with a shock rebuild, new fork springs & set up it will feel 10 years newer!

And he`s absolutely correct too.
It`ll be as good if not better than an R6 `gadget` shock as long as it is set up correctly for YOU but you pay`s your money, you make your choices.

its quite funny ,people who have fitted the r6 shock generally rave about it but people who haven't seems scared of change , it cost me about £100 (£60 shock and £40 adaptor) so im a happy man. i wouldnt waste money on a hagon or nitro as you can do a lot of mods for the price they charge for a shock. if you rebuild a trx shock its still 10 years + old design with worn parts . Anyway we should be trying to help Kayla's Sales
