Stripping carbs
I had my carbs off the other day to set the valve clearances, all the exhausts were within spec but all the inlet had tightened up. I thought I would have a look to see how the emulsuion tubes were as it seems to be running rich at the bottom end as the choke can be knocked off after about 5 seconds of start up!
Anyway I tried to undo the screws on the float bowels and the little buggers would not shift and I felt that I would just end chewing them up,them didn't have a single mark on them so I think they have been undone from new. Does anyone have a handy hint or knack to get the little blighters off?

Re: Stripping carbs
A bit of heat (carefully of course!) should get them pretty easily, just make sure you've got a big enough screw driver so you don't strip the heads.
Failing that, a cut across the top of the screw head with a Dremel & use a big flathead.
HTH.

Heat, on carbs?
Nahhhhh, an IMPACT DRIVER is your friend and need in this situation:

I never tackle Philips headed screws without one, as soon as you take the edges out of the screw heads without them moving you`ve got a LOT more work ahead of you.
Use an impact driver, job done!

Re: Stripping carbs
I used vice grips to take mine off and then replaced them all with allen headed bolts. The originals were butter and the impact driver just smeared them.

I did say CAREFULLY! That's what I did, worked a treat. I couldn't foresee a way to hold the carbs & not smack them with a hammer using the impact driver methodMincehead wrote:Heat, on carbs?

Re: Stripping carbs
Impact driver was not touching them, it looked like it was more likely to take the centre out!!!! I may try a combo of good screw driver and mole grips!

Re: Stripping carbs
Had the same problem I think I used a very small cold chisel on the circumference of the screw and mole grips. Carbs were off the bike and gripped very gently / carefully in a vice. replace with stainless allen keys

Re: Stripping carbs
definately not heat on carbs..too many delicate internals and that funny stuff called FUEL
Wurth make a product called rostoff; its a cold spray used to loosen fasteners.
perhaps in conjunction with some form of persuasion ... mole(vice) grips and /or impact driver.
maybe dummy mount the carbs to something solid to help you out.
good luck
cheers

Re: Stripping carbs
Venhills will sell you new inner cables which as the outer cables are seldom damaged is a cheap option. They also have all the stuff to make up any cable you want
