Post by roket52 » Sun Aug 15, 2010 4:01 am

Hi guys,

Im new to trx's and have just purchased a black 99 with 13500kms. LOve it and cant keep my hands off it. But to my question i was just after some simple help on removing the tank from anyone who has removed their tank before. How do you turn off the fuel when the tank tap does not have an off position?? Mine has a reserve, primary and on position.

Thanks its newb question I know!

I know the answer to this one :D It's a vacuum feed when in the on position which means that fuel will only flow when the engine is running. It will dribble a bit when you take the pipe off though. When you lift the tank you'll have to manouvre the vacuum lines as they become tight. Too easy.
If everything seems under control
your just not going fast enough.

....also, the TRX tank is designed to hinge backwards, so if you take out the two front bolts, one per side, and take off the fuel line from the tap and the breather hose that goes down through the swingarm, and just loosen the long bolt under the seat a little and it will hinge back.

Didn't know that... Seems pretty obvious now that you've mentioned it #-o

Thanks!

G'day Guys,

This is my first post here. I've just removed my fuel tank for painting and so i've also removed the feul tap unit from the bottom of the tank. My Question is when I refit the fuel tap unit after painting will I need to use some sort of gasket glue or something between it and the tank or do you just screw the unit back on? Any wisdom would be much appreciated.

G'day XXR and welcome aboard.

If you look at the tap, there is a groove all round its edge which has a black rubber oval ring gasket it in. It may look a bit flat by now if the taps been on a while

This should just seal up fine when you put it back on, but what I did was took the rubber ring out, turned it over and put it back in the groove on the tap cos the other side was more roundy than the top side, so I thought it would seal better, if you get what I mean.

New rubber gaskets are available from Yamaha still if you need one.

Cheers

Dave

Thanks for the quick reply Dave. Your explanation makes perfect sense.

Will it hinge back far enough to change the air filter element?

Yep….
If it's not made in China, it's a fake!

If you replace the fuel, vacuum and overflow hoses with some that are a bit longer and carefully route them, you can tip the tank back without having to unplug the hoses.
Makes for much easier tinkering.
