New TRX owner with some questions
Hi
I am now the proud owner of a 97 R plate TRX in green (Not my favourite colour but it's growing on me ) It's a great bike and I'm looking forward to taking it round Cadwell on the Bike Magazine track day soon. It joins my other quirky Yamaha a TDR 250 and my Hayabusa.
The bike appears to have been loved at some point in it's 20000 miles but it seems not lately. Any way after having a good look around the bike I found the following, and I wondered if anyone wanted to give me some advice.
1. The air box seems to have had two one inch diameter holes drilled in it upstream of the air filter (which is a K&N) now the bike did have Viper cans on it but the guy I bought it off had put the originals back on. Is this air box mod a known one, is it alright with standard pipes (though I'm hoping to get some pipes soon) does it works, would I be better off with a standard air box?
2. I have read that the standard suspension is a bit soggy, well mine is harder than a ZXR750H1!!! I'm over 16 stone and I hardly move it, I mentioned it to the vendor and he said that the last owner liked it really hard (no sniggering at the back!) and had set it up like this , I'm thinking it's a partially seized suspension linkage as the pre load is set in the middle. The front is quite stiff too but I haven't looked into this fully yet.
Thanks
Heath

you can have my Japanese spec fork springs, teeth rattling! Bottom no probs! My guess is that both front and back springs are not from a TRX! Front fork oil change should tell you what's been done at the front as well.

Re: New TRX owner with some questions
Hello and welcome aboard.
The standard air box has no holes. Standard CV carbs dont need any more air than the box can provide, even with some cans on, so no need for these holes.
The TRX runs rich as standard, so fitting cans actually evens this out and makes it run better, but then a K&N filter will allow even more air through....
Only way to check the set-up is to get some dyno time, but I wouldnt do this until you fit the cans youre gonna get.
Suspension linkages arent known for seizing, but they have no grease nipples...
I'd trun everything to zero (preload, damping, rebound, spring) front and back, and take it for a spin and see how it feels, then adjust until it feels right.
If it doesnt, strip the rear down and grease it. Generally the rear spring is hard and the front forks are soft as standard, but if a shock has done 20k miles, its about due for a refresh/replace. Has it still got the original yellow spring on it?
Cheers,
Dave.

Hi hjp1968!
The holes in the airbox are a common mod with the K&N filter and a Dynojet kit (stage 1).
Mine runs perfect with it (and street legal Termignoni cans)
Perforated greetings from Munich!

Re: New TRX owner with some questions
Hi
The Bike magazine trackday is on Tuesday 17th Aug but may be sold out, I think there is a evening session on the same day too. Cadwell is great to watch and great to ride I was hoping to go on the 2 stroke day this Friday on my TDR but it is being naughty and refusing to play
Let me know if you go on the 17th and I'll look you up and say hi

hi sounds as though all your questions got answered. Let me know when you plan your next Cadwell trip as i'm in lincoln so its my home track. I love to take my TRX out to cadwell as the litre boys struggle to shake her. I won't be going till next year as i've put her to bed now for the winter.
