Sparkplug removal

Is there an easy way to remove the plugs as its very tight for space? Got to change the plugs as its now running on just the left hand pot. Ordered new needle-jets today too as there is alot of black soot in the ends of both cans. I do hope its nothing major as I've only ridden it 4 times since I bought it.

You can drop the radiator off the brackets (but still leave it plumbed in) and get to them that way

I cut a box spanner to the right length to make it easier. I drop the rad a bit and take the fairing off. Its just once a year with the service though. Get the hoover in there before you take the plug out.

agreed, it is a PITA especially if you have big hands
best thing is not to have to change them annually and fit iridium plugs
they have been fitted to all my bikes and not once have they needed changing - have whipped them out to check and they've always been fine.

Drop the rad, and be ready to lose some skin off your hands lol. as with Phuk, I have Iridium plugs in mine.

i made a tool so you can do it while leaving the radiator fully on. Ill post a pic later. Its still tight, but it does indeed work.

The TDM is even worse! Both TDM and TRX now have iridium now.
The best tool is the box spanner in the original tool kit.

I fitted iridium plugs and they lasted 10 miles before they fouled. I then fited std plugs and have done 200km without problems.

I`m guessing it was not so much fouling as `pick-up` of crud that fell into the combustion chambers when you took out the originals, then upon start up it welded/burnt itself to your new and expensive iridiums.
I fit them in all my bikes, great plugs and have NEVER had any problems whatsoever. I`ll add that they greatly increase pick-up and clean up the fuelling too.
Whenever five valve (genesis) headed Yamaha`s have their plugs changed it`s good to use an irline, pressure washer or similar to blast the plug recesses clear of any crud that`s got down in there. Although if your plug lead grommet has been fitted tightly there shouldn`t be much around the plugs anyway.

I fitted Iridiums too but how do you check if they're still fine?

Measuring the gap?
They look a bit dirty but maybe that's just visual and are they still good to go...

Made this, spot welded a bolt to the top of the original plug spanner and used a ratchet spanner, worked fine
