Oil Pressure + Oil pumps

Post by Tigcraft TRX » Mon Nov 09, 2009 11:45 pm

Just made an interesting discovery that may save you lot some heartache and money.
This year I modified a low mileage engine to run a mechanical oil pressure gauge. This involved simply using a NPT tap, gauge and pipe etc. The pump in the engine was like new, and the reading of 38 psi (18 idle) I took as an OK reading.
However running my race tdm motor revealed 60 psi and (18 psi).
I then tonight temporarily swapped the 1st mentioned pump with one that had had horrible bits of bearing through it and had scarring on it, and now the pump now pumps out 60 psi!

SO
- If you've go a scarred pump it still may be well OK. At £300 quid or whatever YAMAHA want, it's worth checking an old one.
- A pump that looks perfect may not be pumping out not a right lot!
- It cost me about £40 to put a gauge on, and seeing as Yamaha overlooked this, it may be worth doing. You can also put a trick 20psi Red led (from RS components) on for about £20.

I don't mean to scare anyone with this. Just passing on my findings. Nik.

Interesting! Would it be possible to combine it with an oil-temperature gauge as well? How does it look, what parts did you use? Anything like the "German" oil light mod?

One light is good and well when the sh*t hits, but pressure and temperature would be more useful for me at least.

Most bike pressure switches are set at 5 psi, which is too low. The one that I fitted from http://www.speedograph-richfield.com/ht ... lines.html is 20 psi, and will warn you in advance of Impending failure. Most TRX's ruin big ends/ cylinder heads because of low oil levels.

Here is the cool Led I fitted which is real bright set at 20 psi.Image

I used a 1/8 npt tap (9MM DRILL BIT) to drill straight into the soft plug on the oil filter cover, which is directly after oil feed pump. Works a treat, and doesn't leak when a little thread seal is used.
