Re: Cam Timing
Need some help finding the E mark on the crankshaft.
When is was taking out the camshaft for the second time i went on autopilot! but i forgot to check if the number 1 cil was on compression stroke! According to the book you can see a E mark trough the water outlet pipe!!! But that would be really strange! a place where there is coolant and also a mark on the crankshaft.
So how can you find out on what stroke number 1 cil is?

Take out cyl 1 sparkplug and run a long screwdriver into the hole....turn the engine and when 1 is at TDC the screwdriver is at "top"....lars wrote:Need some help finding the E mark on the crankshaft.

Re: Cam Timing
i think you can also tell by looking though the inspection hole on the left hand engine cover the centre one lets you turn the engine over and the top left has the marks on the flywheel there's a section on this in the download manual

That's what i thought also! but that 270 degree stuff makes my head spin!Killerwhale wrote:Take out cyl 1 sparkplug and run a long screwdriver into the hole....turn the engine and when 1 is at TDC the screwdriver is at "top"....lars wrote:Need some help finding the E mark on the crankshaft.

What do they mean with 270 degree engine.
when cil1 is at compr tdc
turn it 270 degrees and cil 2 is at compr tdc
after how many degrees is cil again at compr tdc?

Re: Cam Timing
That one i all ready found, thats the TDC marker. the thing is you can put it that marker there 2 times in the 4 stroke cycle.steve speed wrote:i think you can also tell by looking though the inspection hole on the left hand engine cover the centre one lets you turn the engine over and the top left has the marks on the flywheel there's a section on this in the download manual

Re: Cam Timing
Yeah but you have the marks on cam holders and cams to go by as well, they only does 360 whatever.....lars wrote:Are you sure??? it's a 4 stroke cycle, so IMO is 720Killerwhale wrote: 360 of cource...

Re: Cam Timing
ive just had a read of the download manual it does look tricky but if you take your time and get all the marks and letters in the right place all will be ok

Re: Cam Timing
LOL, fascinating stuff, our engine, innit?
You're all right, in a way.
Cylinder 1 will be in top position every 360 degress of course.
It will be in max compression every 720 degree
Whether it's compression or not is entirely decided by the cams' positions.
So, in short, if You have taken out both cams, all You have to care about is that cylinder 1 is in top position (=the marking on the flywheel), then put the cams in according to the picture above.
And 270 degree crank means that cylinder/piston nr 2 is 270 degrees after cylinder 1 (when cylinder 1 is in top, nr 2 will be 270 degrees after, or 90 degrees before, i.e. halfways the stroke, approximately)

Re: Cam Timing
TDC at cil1 is correct and cam timing is also correct, i have turned the engine over several times all ready but i wanted to be sure so i went looking for the E marker! after searching for a long time, with mirrors and lights it's no where to be found. I'm pretty sure that nobody can find it. looking inside the coolant outlet at your crankshaft can't be right!steve speed wrote:ive just had a read of the download manual it does look tricky but if you take your time and get all the marks and letters in the right place all will be ok

Re: Cam Timing
the only E mark i can find is the one on the camshaft sprocket the book says with the No 1 cylinder at TDC the E mark on the exhaust camshaft sprocket is parallel with the cylinder head top surface if you have a haynes book its on page 2.13 hope this helps
