i was lay down looking dead on the centre of the inspection hole and i double checked this ,, the marks on the crank are dead on

ItÂ´s not as much off as mine where and i had 3 clicks left on the tensioner, but question is if the springs actually can click it out all the way.
I wouldÂ´ve checked how many clicks yourÂ´re @

AAAAHHH THE PLOTT THICKENS... How do you know hen your cam chain tensioner spring(and tensioner I spose) is up that famous creek?????

When you hear the chain rattle at +/- 3000rpm
Go slowly from 2500rpm to 3500rpm while driving and you will hear it!

i am looking for a new cam chain but it seems that DID is unavalable so there one called ID ,,never heard of it , and the std one ,, is the ID one any good

your right tsubaki do a very good chain ,, ive done some digging and it appears they are the best ,,now were can i get one from ????

b&c express supply tsubaki chain its Â£70 the std trx chain from yamaha is the same and its Â£45 go figure

My mates 98 model TRX has just shat itself at 60,000 klms.

Thanks to the info on here I have removed the chain through the oil pump housing.

The chain is obviously stretched badly, and I was wondering if anyone out there knows the length of a new chain as I am curious how far it has stretched.

The tensioner seems to be ok, and also the guides appear to be fine.

Sprockets look good as well, so I am just about to check the oil pumps for tolerence, and am waiting for the new genuine Yamaha chain and some gaskets to arrive.

Just to let you know that a new genuine chain from my local dealer here in Oz is $90.00

Many thanks to those that have posted on this subject as it has made a rather difficult job easy.

Wish I didn't say jobs done and that it was easy.

When I started the bike up there was a terrible knock from the left side of the motor.

I got my mate(The owner) to come over, and asked him to start the bike.

When he started it he said that sounds good . I asked him to give it a rev , and when he heard the noise he shut it down immediately.

When i quized him as to wether he had heard that noise he said yes, thats the noise he heard before it started to run rough and stop.

It became obvious that even though the cam chain had jumped and altered the timing originaly, there was a more severe problem.

I decided to drain the oil . Shock horror only 1.2 litres of oil came out , and it was full of metal and what looked like bronze or brass particles.

I removed the sump only to find that it was full of metal.

I now have the motor out of the frame , and am about to split it .

Even before I do this I am sure that the left hand big end bearing has been spun and demolished due to lack of oil.

I will let you know how I get on and may need your help when it comes to the repair .

I am lucky in so far as I have another mate who is bike mad, and is also a helicopter engineer with plenty of experience in motorcycle engines.

Will keep you posted as to future developements, and also what costs are involved .

Any tips will be well received as I continue with the task of getting my mates bike back on the road.

One good thing to come out of this is that whilst I am working on my mates bike I am also learnind about mine at the same time.

Oh dear, that'll be expensive.

Best tip I can give you - get on ebay and start looking for a new crank and barrels

And teach your mate to check the oil

did a search on cam timing and it would seem that the std marks are ok ,, no need to slot the wheels !! is still the case

Found a guy near where I live and he has been able to grind the big ends and adapted some conrod bearings from a car for a total cost of $310- aussie .

I am picking up the crank tomorrow and will let you know what sort of a job he has done.

Could be very useful in the future as this guy seems to be intersted in the Trx.

If his work is good I will get him to do the rebore as well.
