You are better to go the other way, 0 w 40 / 50 or 5 w 40 / 50 than a higher first value Wally. Although, saying that, in Australia with the temperatures there compared to in Europe it would likely be fine. :wink: :

ok, so just so everyone knows:

you need a socket drive to change the oil.

i'm a spanner, so i started undoing everything with spanners. All was fine until i got to the last, awkward bolt on the filter cover.

and now i've got to cycle to the nearest DIY place to go and buy a set of sockets, because my engine is sans-oil... (yes i know; doesn't own any sockets?.... well i've never actually needed them before now).


can anyone say DERP?

yeah, i thought so.

Regarding the amount of oil you need for a change:

i drained the bike thoroughly, left it sitting in the sun for 3 hours and tilted the engine several times to get the dregs out.


upon filling, it took the whole 4 litre can.

after a week of gentle riding, the bike needed a further 0.6 litres (roughly).
since then (after several hundred miles in all conditions), it hasn't used any oil that i've noticed. i guess the oil was just bedding in?


just be aware of this. i suggest buying more than 4 litres of oil for a change. (TRXs need a top up every now and again anyway, so this is wise).

Dont know size, sorry, but if you buy a filter it usually comes with both O rings.

Indeed, the Champion filters (X302) from Halfrauds definately come with at least the larger of the two o-rings.

On the right of that link can be seen oils. I use the Halfrauds semi synth 10W /40 , the second one down in my TRX.

I just changed my oil and filter and I found no spacer or small O-ring. The large O-ring that came with the new filter looked too small in thickness so I left the old one in place as it was still soft and protruding by about 1mm. The new small O-ring looked to be the wrong size as it didn't fit snugly where I assumed it should. It's all back together now with no leaks so we'll see how things go. I mean it's run that way since I bought it so it's all good....Right?....LOL
BTW, I like that in the manual it says: 3.5l Periodic Oil change, 3.6l with a filter replacement, 4.2l Total.... So 600mls of old oil circulating after every change....I used just under 4l of new oil to bring it up to the top mark in the sight glass.

I'm still running the original o-rings on my bike :oops: Maybe I should change them next time, they must be getting a bit brittle by now.
I always found that I overfilled the oil if I didn't run the engine for quite a long time before checking the level.
There seems to be at least half a litre sloshing around in there, so I'd add 3.5 then go for a ride and check it after five minutes.

New to all things TRX have just changed the oil and filter but during the draining got nothing from the 10 mm bolt but all from the sump comments and advice welcome

The oil tank drain bolt is the 12mm bolt at the bottom rear of the engine on the RHS.
Are you sure you've undone the correct bolt?
Are you referring to the 10mm bolt on the left side of the head? If so, that bolt is used to make sure sure you have oil flow to the head, it's not a drain.

Are they any cheaper from the UK by the time you've paid freight/postage?

I usually get them from my local Yamaha dealer when I get the new filter - they're pretty cheap from memory.

They always have them in stock so I guess they are common to other models too.

Just google to part number, or search on any Aus Yamaha dealer site that does mail order parts.

The first large O ring is fitted to about every Yamaha ever made according to this site:

I'm about to do an oil and filter change so I reviewed this thread.

Why on Earth do I need an oil pump cover gasket as per the OP's tip?:

From what I can see I would need only parts from the below list... Am I right?
