oil seal
Ive just fit a new oil seal behind the gearbox sprocket ,,easy job ,and the new seal is slightly different from the old one , the four tags on the back are bigger and the inner dimension is smaller on the new one ( shaft size ) by .6mm both are genuine Yamaha parts so we will see if this slows down the rate of oil consumption

Re: oil seal
I replaced mine too and it made no difference whatsoever.
My local Yamaha dealer was sceptical too.
I don't doubt that it might make a difference (actually I do) , but I'm yet to meet anyone or read anyone's first hand report that it made a difference. I reckon this "oil seal causing the high oil consumption" is another internet propagated myth.

Re: oil seal
Well there you go, you obviously didn't read my report a couple of years ago. My bike uses minimal oil anyway but on the old forum one of the blokes reckoned that if you visually checked your starter motor and found a film of oil on it then chances are your seal is incorrectly fitted. I done that and thats exactly what i found. Checked the old seal when i removed it and yes it was obstructing the oil galleries. New one fitted correctly and my oil consumption dropped from bugger all to 3/5th's of fu*k all.
No oil on my starter motor now except for a bit of chain lube

If everything seems under control
your just not going fast enough.

Re: oil seal
So it's not a confirmed cure for high oil consumption then is it Kev?
Re: oil seal
But for under a tenner, and half an hour's work, it could well be wothwhile. Certainly not a waste of time or money.
