New Trx owner

Post by Phantom » Thu Jun 17, 2021 12:15 am

Hi all.
I've just joined the ranks of Trx owners with a 96 model.
I got it from Queensland delivered by truck yesterday.
67k on it,and in pretty good nic.
It started after a while(3 weeks to get down from qld) and when it did run it ran rough.
I took it for a ride down my street and it was down on power and could barely get up my road!
It did run better after a while but stinks of petrol.I think it is running way rich?
I have pulled the carbs off and they look like they have just been cleaned. The needles look new.
Although the carb boots are shot.
Any ideas about where to buy the boots in Melbourne? And any other parts I may need?
Cheers.

It is not about the needles itself but the needle tubes. They tend to wear out, becoming oval.
You might want to have a look at those!

Yamaha will have them.
20+ yrs you can expect things like the manifolds to be shot...
Replace the plugs while at it. Good chance they have fueled up. Buy 1m of 7mm copper core HT lead and replace the plug leads. They simply unscrew from the coil and plug cap so simple easy task.
Plug spanner should be in the tool kit. Remove the fairing, next there a 4 bolts that hold the radiator in place and once removed this will allow you to push the radiator forward with hoses still connected to get to the plugs. Give it a bath beforehand to make sure no shit falls in the plug hole. Any water that weeps in there will exit via a small hole on the side of the head so make sure this is clear too.
My personal choice for plugs are Brisk racing BOR 12 LGS.
I’ve had 3 iridium die on me within 500km’s over the years and the brisk plugs will give you the same life span as iridiums and the flame front is not shrouded by an earth strap so better flame front propagation. Check the air filter is ok...
Check the main jet in the carbies and You’ll quite often find 142 fitted. If needles are ok check the emulsion tube as these wear plus 137-140 main will help if still finding fueling issues.
Check the air cut off valve cover ( white plastic disc on side of carby ) as these break down from sun exposure. ( this usually is a 0- 1/8 throttle issue tho ) while at it fit an in-line fuel filter ...
Welcome to the world of the trx...
Fuel tap is another issue and I’ll save that for another conversation...

Note the plug spanner size for the Brisk plug is a 16mm !!!!!

Hi Phantom!

Welcome to the forum- have fun here and in the real world!

If she starts quite reluctant when cold, it's also a good idea to check the valve clearances!

The 42.000 km interval is obviously a typo and should read 24.000 km ...

Welcoming greets from Munich!

Thanks for the tips so far everybody!
I have pulled the carbs apart some more and found that my mains are 142.5 and one of my diaphrams has a tear in it.
The air cut off cover looks to be solid,as does the diaphram inside it.
The emulsion tubes are looking pretty round, but how oval do I need to get concerned about?
Next question is where to get the diaphrams from?
I have ordered new carby boots from yamaha but the diaphrams are $179 each!
The emulsion tubes are $73 each.
Anyone had any luck with cheaper parts from ebay perhaps??

Hi Phantom!

For TRX parts you can (still) always look at KEDO .

Mikuni Oz has a kit that includes the diaphragm/ slide

https://www.mikunioz.com/shop/bdst38-mi ... ha-tdm850/
They have emulsion tubes too for $33 each or as many do use the keyster kit Rod placed up ..

Noticed this too on the Litetek site a rather comprehensive rebuild page with plenty of photos for reference ..

Thanks alot everybody for your helpful tips.
I quite like the looks of the litetek seals.
I have ordered 2 manifold rubbers from peter stevens, and 2 carb diaphrams from a company in Wales.
Next I am looking at the plugs and valve clearance.
Followed by a look at the oil supply lines.I am a bit concerned about keeping a decent oil pressure to my motor!
After that it is brakes, and probably an R1 fuel tap upgrade.
My goal is to have the trx up and ready to go for spring in Melbourne.
Wish me luck!
I tried to upload some photos but I was getting a strange message?

Welcome to the forum, you've just found the first of many things that are broken and for various reasons currently unfixable.
Sorry about that.
You can link to pics on other hosting sites but can't upload any pics directly to the forum.
