Shameless Stainless Plug for Australian Members
These guys are unbelievably good.
https://www.stainlessstore.com.au/index.php
I have ordered from them a few times now and it is always a pleasure. So good I am compelled to plug their business.
So what's so good about them?
Shopping Experience is great. You visit their site, it is well laid out and easy to navigate. They have pretty much anything you need for a bike and you can make really complex order easily. Got example, I order a variety of different nuts and bolts and split pins, I can order just one bolt of every size if I want, no problem. Just pick the bolt or whatever you need, pick the size and pick the quantity. Update cart, pay with your card, easy
Range Aside from some specialist motorcycle fasteners you can get pretty much anything you want on 304 or 316 stainless. Great range, and also split pins, grub screws, nylon nuts, washers etc etc.
Price first off they will match any price, so all good. 2nd off, they shit all over the likes of ProBolt. And then shit all over them again. For example, a single M6*20 stainless steel socket cap will cost you $4.77 from ProBolt. The same bolt will cost you $0.25 from the Stainless Store. Nuf said.
Postage Cost Free delivery on all orders over $75. For orders under $75, a flat delivery fee of $6.50 Australia-wide.
Postage Time This is incredible. Order before noon and there is a good chance you will get it the same day. Otherwise you will get it the next day.
I periodically stock up on a selection of bolts from these people and pretty much just replace bolts as I work on bikes, but you could easily replace every bolt on your bike with stainless for $50 easy. Just sit down with you laptop, pull out the bolt to measure it, add it to your cart, replace and then do the same with the next bolt, ones you have them all in submit your order. If you have a bike thats a few years old and the bolts and shit are looking tired just replace them with stainless.
Now I have heard of people using Coventry fasteners and I used them a few times but this place is where its at.
Buy stuff from these guys and you will never bother going anywhere else.
today I ordered this list of bolts from them.

Re: Shameless Stainless Plug for Australian Members
This is the way to do it if you want to change your bike to cap heads as I,ve chosen with 90% of the bike now completed.
The thing I do need though are M10 shim washers at 1mm and 0.5mm thickness for the front calipers.
I only have 2mm thick washers.
I noticed the M10 washers online here are 1.2mm which may be another option as I need to fill a 2.5mm void.

the calliper bolts are M10 fine (1.25 pitch) just worth noting. I swapped mine for 316 stainless, but they were tricky to find. Like you everything on the bike I have swapped to stainless, mostly cap heads and a few dome heads where needed. There are 2 or 3 very long bolts holding on the oil tank, I could not find replacements for those
With the washers you could make them thinner on a wetstone, I did this for washers for the needles in the carbs, takes ages though

Yes I know the long sump bolts you mean. That was one of them that was corroded to the side of the sump and snapped off during dismantling 18mths previous on my motor.
I purchased a Sidchrome Nano tool kit that fits neatly in the tail that will service most of the day to day needs with the bike.
So all I need to carry as extras is a couple of spanners to deal with wheel nuts.
I picked up a small sliding tee bar that fits neatly inside the case too.

Yes i understand your pain.cobbadiggabuddyblooo wrote:Yes I know the long sump bolts you mean. That was one of them that was corroded to the side of the sump and snapped off during dismantling 18mths previous on my motor.
One of mine snapped also
Did you manage to find a replacement or did you buy from Yamaha.
Its being a right so and so to get out also .
I intend to swap all bolts possible when rebuilding. I snapped off two cam cap bolts when doing a re-ring on my motor in my 1st bike.
The issue was it was at different times and had to remove the head each time to get the bold removed by a cylinder head shop. I was using a torque wrench both times. I ended up buying new bolts and having them cut down to the correct length by the machine shop and buying a new 3/8 drive torque wrench.
bolts made of putty im thinking
Is it Brock friendly???

Re: Shameless Stainless Plug for Australian Members
Quick question for the brains trust... How do I translate Yamaha part numbers into correct sizes for nuts/washers/bolts etc.? .. or do I just need a trained eye?
I'd like to buy stainless bolts, washers and nuts for the windshield/ mirror mounts.
Cheers.

Re: Shameless Stainless Plug for Australian Members
just take them out and measure them,
To measure a bolt you measure the diameter of the threaded part and the length
so a bolt with a 6mm thread diameter and a 30mm thread length will be an M6 * 30
a bolt with a 8mm thread diameter and a 40mm thread length will be an M8 * 40
and so on
I think the screen bolts are M5 * 20 but not sure

Re: Shameless Stainless Plug for Australian Members
Got to agree, stainless fastenings have got affordable...... I've found that there's a sometimes a perception that stainless steel is a strong metal (in standard form). 316 and 304 grade fastenings cant compete for strength with a metric Class 8.8 bolt (medium tensile), or even less so, a Class 12.9 cap screw..... in imperial, a metric Class 8 = grade 5 ... imperial grade 8 is even higher .... stainless also fatigue cracks if worked too strenuously or if stretched becomes weak (bolts), and work hardens (this may be where a perception of strength comes from because the metal becomes harder, stiffer, but also brittle, then breaks) .... I have to admit to using more stainless fastenings on products, for the good looks and lasting ability, but don't use them where real force is needed...... The TRX is sporting a few S/S cap screws as well.....hell, they so look good!!

Re: Shameless Stainless Plug for Australian Members
I couldn't agree more Smithers. For critical connections replace with identical or higher grade, if in doubt use OEM. But for aesthetics I am a big fan of 316, especially button heads. Recently installed these to get rid of all those ugly rusty bolts. Ordered from Bolt.com.au, they were really good as well.
