Post by ac@39 » Sun Apr 26, 2015 11:00 am

notoriously difficult but not impossible as have done it before but now have an engine with no chain.... have tried to undo with it in gear but its not happening, i have an impact driver but havent tried using it as unsure if i may damage something internal .. anyone have any tips how i may accomplish this ??

Before removing the chain, leave the motor in neutral and then try the sprocket nut, the chain and the rear wheel on the ground will be enough.
Won't damage anything.

I believe an air compressor and rattle gun would undo the nut, even in neutral with no chain. A short burst or two should do the trick.
I wouldn't use one of those impact drivers that you whack with a hammer though, you're likely to damage something.

Another idea would be to attach something like a leather belt or some seatbelt webbing to the frame/swingarm/wheel, then roll the other end around the sprocket a couple of times in the direction such that it tightens up on the sprocket as you undo the nut. Put some tension on the socket wrench then give the end of the wrench handle a sharp hit with a hammer (in the direction that undoes the nut). The 'shock' works a bit like a poor man's rattle gun to get things started.

It has a std clockwise( right hand) thread so to remove the nut, unscrew in an anti clockwise direction just like 99.9% of the other threads on your TRX.
Torque it up as per spec and best to put a new tab washer on there if it has been used once before.
I've changed the front sprocket 4 times in the last year bouncing between 16 and 17 teeth and it cracks loose nice and easy.

If it's not made in China, it's a fake!
